About

Welcome to the Oak Island Biomimicry Trail!

The Trail was designed by local 7th graders from Sauvie Island Academy in partnership with Portland State University’s Capstone students.  The idea of the Biomimicry Trail is to help people notice nature’s genius and adapt its ideas to innovative  designs that will help our world.   Our ideas are just starting points inspired by nature.  We invite you to take them a step further by “asking  nature” yourself for sustainable design ideas.

How to use this website:

Throughout your hike, you will find trail brown guide posts along the path. These will be marked with a symbol that corresponds to more specific information regarding that topic. When you find the signposts, take a moment to look around your surroundings and find things that might correspond with that topic. Next, select the icon on this website that matches the one on the signpost and you’ll be able to read various examples of innovative designs created by local students on that topic. (You can also scan the QR code on the signpost with your phone). These designs were formulated with species that live on Oak Island in mind and how their special adaptations may help make the world a better place by creating unique inventions. Take a look at the ingenious ideas at each trail guide post!

You can use the QR codes or access the website with your phone. (mirrorofnature.bigwhisper.com)
